Biography

Butcher T, Anthony Scharschmidt was born on June 22nd 1962 in Montreal, Quebec. Scharschmidt the only child of Jamaican born parents relocated to the country of his mother and father when he was 6 years old, residing in rolllington Town, a suburb of Kingston.

Butch returned to Montreal as probably the world's first international ambassador for hip-hop outside of the U.S. The proximity of Montreal and New York probably supports that fact. Butch would now play a role in bringing a new musical direction to Montreal, and indirectly to Toronto as well. Butch's first D.J. set up was comprised of a Lloyd's turntable built into the amplifier system itself with a radio tuner and 8-track. Butch hooked up an external cassette deck into the system and began making his own loops via an early medium popular with D.J.'s of that time called "pause tapes"

Butch begain doing house parties around the island of Montreal and started to build a reputation for himself as one of the only disc-jockeys in town who could sctually play records the way they did "south of the border". Butch then began working across town in all the clubs that would play hip-hop, funk and reggae like The Alcove and Sir Winstin. Butch would also play at Hotel bars, black parties and special events. Then Butch met somebody that he would again change the very musical fabric of the city with. That person was CHOM and CKGM disc-jockey Micheal Williams. Williams a Cleveland, Ohio transplant, would later be a part of much music's first generation of veejays. In 1983 williams recruited Butch as the D.J. and himself as the host-broadcaster of Saturday night 6 hour radio extravaganza of hip-hop music and banter called "Club 980" on CKGM. It would be Canada's first hip-hop radio program.

Butch who through his friendship with Andrew Carr had allowed him to make history as being the first to bring hip-hop culture over the border, was now making history on Canada's airwaves. In 1992, Butch then began his very own show on CKUT called "Butcher T's Noon Time Cuts", on Friday after-noons, which many montrealers say makes the beginning of the gamut in urban music from r&b to hip-hop to gospel to pop to reggae to soca and beyond. In the mid 90's Butch's career took on a whole new life of it's own when he hooked up with a couple of new party promoters in the city; Ricky D. and Shaheed. 1999 saw Butch double his broadcasting duties when he was hired by K-103 program Director Joe Delaronde as a swing-man. Butch would fill in on "Street Sounds", Mon-Thurs, again bringing his distinctive deejaying style to yet another station. Do to popular demand Butch later became host of "Street-Sounds over-nite" to K-103. In 2003 Butch was hired by yet another new program-director Duke Eatmon ( CBC RADIO) who was a childhood fan of his and even tried to pattern his own deejaying style after Butch's after watching him at parties as a 13 year-old D.J. wannabe.

Eatmon was known as a "Butchfile" and was starstruck when he began working alongside his boyhood idol. Eatmon named Butch the new host of the station's drive show "The Traffic Jam" Butch played everything from hip-hop to R&B to pop to country to rock. Again showing musical versatility. Butch that year was also celebrated when a party was thrown in his honour commemorating his 20 years as a D.J. (even though he'd been working longer than that) he was also featured on the cover of "Clin D'oeil Magazine in an article about local urban celebrities.

The same year Butch also began another career as a party and concert promoter alongside Ricky D. Putting together New Year's Eve extravaganzas. As well as bringing acts to town like Cypress Hill and R&B veterans Cameo, Sister Sledge and Aaron Hall to what was now known as mount Real.

Butch continues to wow new and old fans alike. Butch currently has several media projects in the works, which include: net radio, recording projects and sound engineering. In 2006 Butch also attended the Stylus awards and during that evening two Hall of Fame awards were presented. Toronto's Sunshine Soundcrew and Montreal's Butcher T were the first DJ's admitted into the Stylus DJ Awards Hall of Fame.
